Event Description
The Lapwing Music Festival 2016 Special Guest JOSEPH TAWADROS – Oud
The Lapwing Music Festival features four extraordinary young musicians from the UK and beyond for four candle-lit solo recitals in one of the world’s most stunning locations.
The first Lapwing Music Festival will be held at the Cuckmere Haven Coastguard Cottages on August 5-7 this year. This series of solo recitals, with a view of the majestic Seven Sisters, is in support of the Cuckmere Haven SOS campaign with seeks to save the iconic cottages from coastal erosion.
BIOGRAPHY
At 32, Joseph Tawadros is established as one of the world’s leading oud performers and composers. A virtuoso of diversity and sensitivity, Joseph performs in concert halls worldwide and is known for his brilliant technique, deep musicianship and joyous style of performance.
His drive to push musical boundaries has led to many collaborations with significant performers and a solid repertoire of innovative, original music. He has recorded 13 albums – Storyteller, Rouhani, Visions, Epiphany, Angel, The Prophet: Music Inspired by the Poetry of Kahlil Gibran, The Hour of Separation, Band of Brothers, Concerto of the Greater Sea, Chameleons of the White Shadow, Permission to Evaporate, Truth Seekers, Lovers and Warriors and his latest offering World Music. Joseph has received 12 nominations and won three ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Awards in 2012, 2013 and 2014 for Best World Music Album.
A resident of Sydney since 1986, Joseph was nominated for Young Australian of the Year in 2014, received the NSW Premier’s medal for Arts and Culture in the same year and was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (AM) for his services to music and composition in 2016.
The Lapwing Music Festival
The Lapwing also represents the fragile and ephemeral state of the beauty of this beloved place, having been reduced in numbers such that it is no longer frequently seen at the Haven and has been given Red Status by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. The four solo recitals featured in the inaugural Lapwing Music Festival will allow these exceptional players to present their own personal reflections on the place and their art.
No.5 Coastguard Cottages, built shortly after the National Coastguard Service was founded in 1822, is an extraordinarily intimate place to experience music. Without electricity, evening performances will be by candlelight, accompanied by the waves and, hopefully, the cry of the Lapwing.
